01.27.2003 09:37am - When Good Skunks Go Bad

Comments (3)

This weekend we went to Bar H Ranch for mountain biking. It was pretty fun, but very cold out! It hovered around 0 C all weekend... brrr. On Saturday night we went for a night-ride and took the dogs with their glowing collars. About halfway through a 5 mile ride Ted saw a skunk (but the dogs didn't, luckily) and we thought, "Oh my gosh, what would we ever do if the dogs got sprayed by a skunk, and we're way out here staying in the RV."

Well guess what... only a couple minutes later there was another skunk and this time the dogs saw it, gave chase, and Tigger got sprayed! I guess I have been lucky that I have had dogs all my life and never had to deal with this before, but my luck couldn't hold out forever. What a smell that is! Not like the highway road-kill smell at all when you get it up-close and fresh like that, it smelled like some kind of burning chemical smell. Kind of like sulfur, only WORSE.

Anyway, we finished our ride and then we took Tigger in the shower and shampoo'ed him up, and then sprayed him with this very strong-smelling citronella bug spray I have to mask the smell. It worked pretty well. I thought there was no way we'd be able to stay in the RV with him so we'd have to pack up and go home, but it was actually not that bad, and we managed to stay the weekend and get some more good riding in.

However, that smell is lingering on Tigger's fur. Tonight we are going to try a hydrogen peroxide and baking soda remedy that I am finding everywhere when I do a search for "skunk remedy". Here's a link. I'll post if it works.

Anyway, other than that it was a good weekend!

We now have two lovely dogs, Dirty and Stinky. You should see their web page. It was done by Pepe Le Pew.

An update on the hydrogen peroxide remedy: it helped. But the smell is not totally gone. It says at this site: http://toller.tripod.com/skunk.html that you should use it *before* using any soap or anything... so it was too late for that with Tigger. Anyway, it's not too bad at all right now.

Hey,
My dog and I got sprayed by a skunk a while back. I was going crazy with the lingering smell that was coming from my own hair... and the smell coming from him was still pretty strong. I got this GREAT stuff called Skunk off and it comes in a little bottle, I keep one with my camping gear, in my car, and in my house. It was like 15$, I'm pretty sure any Vet will carry it. I don't smell myself anymore!
