01.29.2003 10:59am - Conversion to Movable Type

Comments (14)

Another big change on brindleweb this morning... my conversion of this blog to a new software, Movable Type. The conversion seems to have gone well, and you will see a few new features, like the stuff in the right column on the main page, and the ability to "save" your info in the comments!

I wanted to change to new software for a few reasons. I wanted some new features, like categories for my entries, and the ability to put a "latest comments" column. Greymatter was really nice and very easy to use, but was no longer being updated (except through third-party hacks). Movable Type, they say, is constantly evolving so I thought that would be a good choice. Plus it offered an "import" function for old Greymatter entries & the new features I was looking for. So there we go!

Moving to MT, eh? Sounds nice. I am on pMachine myself, but many, many people use MT and there is a great support network, so if you have problems someone will be able to help you!

I like the changes.

It is ALL *good* folks - we are taking CHARGE of the personal web-site maintenance and CMS communities....yeah yeah yeah!

this is FUN to hang out on brindleweb....makes me feel so so....ORANGE...!

Hey, now that you are an MT expert, you have probably done a bunch of research....

Is there a plugin or an external resource or desktop toolkit app that allows you to edit new MT entries via a WYSIWYG editing model ?

I know there are things out there like htmlArea and editize, but have you seen somebody already build a WYSIWYG access to an MT blog...

Just wondering if you have seen something like that...

thanks !

All these blog tools are good. I could find no real reason to choose one over another. I kind of feel like I might be joining a big evil empire by switching to Movable Type because SO MANY people use it. But I guess that's a good thing.

Corey, I don't know about WYSIWYG for MT. I am not a big fan of WYSIWYG editing. I did do a search on the MT forum (URL http://www.movabletype.org/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi - you should try this too and see if it gives you the answers you're looking for) and found lots of people using various things. I also did a google search and there was some stuff... anyway, I don't know anything about it really. I am using MovableType in a very bare-bones way - I even removed a lot of functionality! Like trackbacks and pings, what the heck is that stuff? I guess one day I might figure out I want it and put it back in.

Check out the suggested blogging tools at MT http://www.movabletype.org/resources.shtml under Desktop Blogging Tools ...I am use w.bloggar and its okay but sometimes ya just have to mark up by hand eh. BTW Janice , if you have HTL in comments enabled ( I don't ) see Brad Choates fix at http://www.bradchoate.com/past/mtsanitize.php and install this if you haven't already

Never mind , I see you have this parsed for bad HTML like SSI, JS, ASP hacks :-)

BTW w.bloggar works with more than MT ...quite a selection of blog suites

Thanks Guy, no I don't have HTML enabled in the comments right now. Mostly because I think it's cool to be able to paste a link right in and have it auto-linked, which doesn't work if you enable HTML.

Yeah, probably I'm just "behind the times" again but I haven't gotten into WYSIWYG, at least not yet, for now I just prefer to do it all manually. But in my quick search yesterday I saw people using w.blogger, Adminimizer, Radio Userland or whatever... lots of different stuff.

hey janice, i like the look of the blog, not that it really needed it, but it's really cool now. i really need to get mine up to date and stuff, maybe i'll switch to MT, it sounds like it rocks. hopefully i'll have the time to play with some more pretty soon.

oh yeah, and mardi gras is going to be SUPERFUN. i can't wait, and it IS going to be the best year yet.

Hey Wayne, thanks. Yeah you should get working on your blog so I can have another "blog friend". :) MT is pretty cool. Like I said above though, it is a bit harder to install & get started then Greymatter. Also the template / tag system seems more complicated. But the upside of that is, that the default templates it comes with are pretty darn cool on their own, so you don't need to even change it unless you want (unlike Greymatter's plain-text look).

Anyway, I'd be happy to help out if I can - when you're ready to get started again.

Hey, the reason I am looking for WYSIWYG editing tools that integrate with MT is so that I can get more non-techie people into managing and contributing content for their own blogs....

Coreman, that's cool - the more bloggers the better. :) Hopefully the links that Guy and I posted here will help you. I think there should be something available.

Hi, Janice. Got your blog address from Ce, because I was thinking of taking full control of my blogs (and feedback comments) and installing MovableType onto my home computer.

I don't already have a webserver setup (but I do have Serv-U for FTP) ... could you lend some wisdom on what software you used for the Perl, the MySQL, and the webserver? Very much appreciated!

Posted by on 10.03.2003 02:42pm CST

Hi Ben. If you send me your e-mail address (you can do it through the contact form at http://brindleweb.com/contact.php ) I can e-mail you about this, but I'll try to put a quick summary for you here.

First of all I don't run my own webserver. I have a hosting company. So I probably can't help you too much there. But installed on my webhost I have:
OS: Linux 2.4.9-31 (soon to be upgraded)
Perl: version 5.006001
Apache: version 1.3.28 (Unix)
PHP: version 4.3.2
MySQL: version 3.23.56
MovableType: version 2.51 + some plugins

I am pretty impressed with MovableType. It is very flexible and has lots of features. Besides the ones it comes with, there are lots of plugins available to get other extra features, and they are super-easy to install and integrate. So that's very cool.

I'm not sure if that answers your questions or not, if you want to talk more send me an e-mail.

Checked out your blog! It's cool. I am also even more proudly Canadian now that I am living in the US. :)
