04.01.2003 04:00pm - Home Improvement

Comments (6)

We unfortunately skipped out on the Ouachita Challenge this weekend, we just didn't feel up to it physically or mentally! We did, however, start on some Home Improvement that we've been putting off for a long long time. We started painting our bathroom and planning colors for some other rooms too.

(Note, the below is an edited exerpt of an e-mail I wrote my friend Mike, so Mike if you're reading this it will sound familliar - I just did such a good job of explaining our "home improvement ineptitude" that I thought I'd put it in this blog entry too).

Ted and I are the WORST home decorators ever! Actually, I don't know if we are good at it or not because we never even try! We moved into our house 2.5 years ago and have done NOTHING to it. We did no painting in the last house either. In fact, I moved in with Ted in 1996 and he had all this "starving student" type furniture, you know, mis-matched stuff from garage sales, etc. Now it is 6.5 years later and we still have the same stuff! It is so ridiculous. We live like bachelor roommates really, and the funniest thing is that we live like that in this nice house with pool and everything, in a nice suburb with all the families and their kids.

The bathroom we are currently painting was bright purple and some walls had white splotches, the sponge look or whatever. As soon as we moved in, we said "YUCK we've got to paint!" but never did. We are just so lazy. Anyway, after this it is going to be pale yellow, and we got a shower curtain and stuff that is navy sun-and-moon sort of pattern, so I think it will look really nice.

After that we have plans to tackle the ensuite, which is currently wallpapered with dark red/burgundy and off-white in a bold stripe pattern - it looks like a circus tent!

I expect to see before and after pictures! And maybe you should have a poll to get some help in choosing styles and colours?

Ooops, too late for the "before" pictures. I will try to post some "after" though. And that is a good idea for the next room!

Are you guys still sitting on Island Farms milk crates ? If so, how did you smuggle them over the border...?

No... no milk crates. Just really old cheap crappy furniture that doesn't match anything.

An update on the bathroom... it is almost finished now. All the painting is done and it looks quite nice. We still have some work to do since we have a border we want to put up around the ceiling and also we have to put up the towel racks, pictures, and other stuff. So we will have ONE nice room in the house... but still a long way to go if we want to lose the "student" look! I will post pictures of the bathroom when we are finished... maybe... if I am not too lazy.

Home improvements sound like fun! I guess my next home (in Halifax most likely; ) will have the 'student' look...can I have those milk crates?!?

Call you back tonight,
Love,
Susan

Hey Sue, good to hear from you. Sorry, I have no milk crates to donate. But anyway, even your current appartment looks less student-like than some parts of our house!! It seems to me that some people just have the "home decorating gene" and some people don't. The question is, if you don't can you "fake it"? Hopefully. We do now have one nice room! :)

We are going golfing tonight and I'm not sure what else. But hopefully I'll be able to take your call because it sure seems like we are playing "phone tag" lately!
