04.07.2003 10:11am - Crazy Hailstorm

Comments (2)

On Saturday night in the Dallas area we had a crazy hailstorm! We were on our way out to a party and heard the weather warnings on the radio. Then the hail started. The hail was about the size of those jumbo marbles or jawbreaker candy, and we saw a few larger pieces the size of golfballs.

On the highway people stopped under the overpasses to try to protect their cars - just stopped dead in the middle of the highway causing a major traffic jam. So we were trapped in gridlocked traffic a couple cars back from the overpass watching the hail ping off the hood of the car causing dents! And it was so loud falling on the car roof. It was quite a scary experience. Our car has 3 or 4 tiny dents from the hail, but they're not too bad, you can't notice unless you are specificly looking for it.

When we got home we discovered that the RV roof was FULL of dents and all three of the plastic skylights / vents had been shattered.

People had told us before that Dallas sometimes got hail like that, damaging cars and roofs. However, this was the first time in the 2.5 years we lived here that we actually saw it. YIKES.

Glad there were no injuries! But wow, that is some serious damage from snow!! Maybe you could get a shirt made, "I Lived Through a Dallas Hailstorm, And All I Got Was This Crappy T-Shirt!"

Spring is the time for crazy weather in Dallas. We've had tornado warnings, flash flood warnings, hail, really loud scary thunderstorms, temperatures of 28 C one day and 6 C the next, etc. It is very strange. So far no serious or painful damage though (knock on wood).
