04.14.2003 10:11pm - Golf Lessons & New Wheels

Comments (2)

We have signed up to take some discounted golf lessons through work. Our first one was last Thursday (but I didn't get a chance to write about it yet). It went pretty well. The instructor seemed nice, knowledgable, and gave us some useful tips.

The lesson lasted about 1.5 hours and was just the four of us (Dan, Vanessa, Ted and I). I did really well during the lesson and really thought I was learning something. However, we went to the driving range on Saturday and my newfound skills seemed to disappear. Hmmmm.

Ted bought a cheap set of clubs online from The Golf Warehouse a few weeks ago. He is having some trouble with vibrations and the instructor told him that it's because they are too short (or actually just the head is too angled from the shaft) so he is hitting too much with the toe of the club. We thought maybe he could get the angle changed, but apparently the clubs are too cheap, they are made of a cheap material which can't be bent. So, he has bought a new set of just irons on ebay, a much better pair, for a pretty good price.

Now I am going to buy myself a bag and use his old irons. Maybe if they are too short for him, they'll only be a little too big for me. :) I certainly don't want to buy any better ones at this point. I am not sure if I even like the sport. I've gone golfing about a total of 10 times in my life and I really sucked. I'm hoping the lessons will help.

Also we went mountain biking for the first time in ages Sunday. We went to Erwin Park, which is finally dried up after all this hot weather we've been having! I had my new wheels, new tires, and Stan's No-Tubes kit installed finally (put it all together on Saturday). The installation was pretty easy, even the tires pumped up first try (on the front) and second try (on the rear), although we did it with a floor pump and Ted had to pump like a madman! Thanks Ted! Check here for the current specs of my bike! It all felt really good out on the trail.

Ahh...golf...a nice walk spoiled!! I can't wait for golf season to start....got my swing figured out at the end of last season and now I am ready to go!!

Just remember to be patient...golf takes a loooooooong time to learn!

Yeah... it is certainly not a straightforward sport. Even people who have been working at it for years still have trouble. It seems very complex, and when things aren't going well it is EXTREMELY hard to figure out why.

As you can maybe tell from the above pessimistic paragraph, my visits to the driving range since I wrote this blog entry have not gone so well... :(

Next lesson is tomorrow! Maybe the instructor can straighten me out again.
