09.16.2003 11:46am - Laminate Flooring

Comments (3)

This weekend we ripped up the carpet in our living room and installed Pergo Prodigy laminate flooring (i.e. fake hardwood) in "Antique Amber Oak" color. It is not quite finished - we still have to put down the moldings and trim - but it looks great.

We went with the fake stuff because we have real hardwood in our hall and family room and it is just trashed. The surface is all scratched and gouged. I think it is the dog nails. We thought we could just find some "tougher" hardwood but when we asked around at different flooring places they all advised we go with laminate if we were going to be so rough on our floors.

We got the most realistic wood-grain we could find, and a color that pretty closely matches our existing hardwood so it won't look too strange to have them both in the same house, and I have to say it looks pretty good. It is a big improvement over the gross, dingy, stained and unravelling carpet that was there before! It will be easier for our Roomba vacuum as well. :)

Installation was very easy. We had to cut around a few pillars which was a little tricky. There are no nails or glue so that really makes it simple. Putting up the moldings and trim is proving to be way more difficult than the floor itself!

Question: I am looking at putting hardwood or laminate in my living room. I am worried that it wont 'look' like real hardwood. That it will look fake.
How do you find the overall look. Would say someone know looking at it that it wasnt real wood?

Tammy, I honestly think ours looks pretty good. I saw a lot of variance from brand to brand and even different lines from the same companies. I chose the Pergo Prodigy because I thought it looked the most realistic. I don't think anyone would guess just by looking that it is not real wood. However, if you walk on it or tap on it you can tell, just because the "sound" is different.

My real opinion on hardwood vs laminate is that... if I could do whichever I wanted I'd choose hardwood. It is just "warmer" and "softer" and it does have that advantage of being genuine and adding to the value of your house if/when you sell. However if you have big rowdy dogs that will trash your hardwood then you probably need something tougher. The dogs' nails have worn huge gouges in the parts of our house that are hardwood and that is the ONLY reason that I wanted laminate.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your living room.
