Well, I thought I was going to be a stay-at-home Mom for the next while, but because my unpaid leave hasn't been approved yet and my maternity leave expired last week, I am now working again!
Nortel just introduced a new kind of leave that has some advantages over the regular unpaid leave I was planning, so I delayed putting in my application for leave until I could apply for this new kind. However, there wasn't time for it to be approved before my maternity leave ran out.
Luckily my managers are flexible and are allowing me to work from home until the leave is approved. Luckily Ted is also flexible and is planning to work from home and/or modify his schedule so that he is home more often and can help me make sure I get enough time to put in some working hours.
The first day back at work went alright. Ted went in to the office for the morning and I got very little done. He came home at lunch and we have been alternating taking care of Peyton and working in the den this afternoon so that we can both get our work done.
Hopefully that leave will be approved soon!

So sorry your leave has not come through.
It is so hard to return but especially hard when you are not expecting it.
If you are breast feeding do go to your doctor for help.
Buy some cheap pillows at the thrift store and beat the ***** **** out of them. That is what I did 21 years ago.
My cares are with you.

Janice,
That really sucks.
This is supposed to be a wonderful time for you as a new mother.
Take care girl!

Janice,
I hope that you get your leave soon. You say,"I am now working again!"
I think that looking after a baby is work requiring skill and dedication. That's real work and crucially important.
I guess work is often defined as something you get paid for. T'aint necessarily so.
Enjoy Peyton!

I sure hope that you can get your leave approved soon!!! As nice as it is to get out in the work force here and there for adult company, with a young baby and breastfeeding...it certainly should be approved that you can stay at home right now. It is HARD work looking after a young baby, and because of that, you should be well supported. My best of luck to you.
I have such great benefits here in Canada and being a teacher, I have a strong union with great benefits, and even then I don't feel like I get enough support to be a mom the way I need to be, so I can't imagine what you go through in the U.S...my best of luck to you and do let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the comments and support everyone! Don't worry, things are going fine. I am only working from HOME and Peyton is still my first priority. Also, it's not the company's fault, but my fault for trying to get a leave with better benefits. :)
And thanks Jean, for the very true words about work vs paid work! Baby care, so far, is sometimes just as hard and frustrating as anything I've done in my paid job. But happily, it is MORE rewarding!

Hi Janice, good to see Peyton is doing so well. You guys are obviously great parents! Hope you get your leave - Carole Ann has a whole year's maternity leave - she couldn't imagine having to go back to work after a few weeks! I guess that's the difference between the U.S. and Canada...
Julia is almost 3 months old now - she's growing up so fast! Check out her website - I just posted some new pics.
Take care,
Matt

Hey Matt, I checked out your site again. Julia is looking very cute & very big! Looks like she has about the same amount of hair as Peyton too... not much. :) It is amazing how they grow isn't it! I feel like every day Peyton does something new. Maybe our babies will get to meet at Christmas time, that would be cool.
