09.30.2005 10:50pm - A Tree on our House!

Comments (3)

Part 4 (did I say 3-parter? Well, LOTS of stuff has been happening). It was really windy yesterday. When Peyton and I returned from her doctor visit I was pretty shocked to find that we could hardly see the house from behind the branches of a huge oak tree on the neighbor's front lawn that had toppled right onto our house!

It looked pretty bad - this tree was HUGE. I called Ted at work and he headed home. After dropping Peyton at the neighbors I went inside to check on the animals and was pleasantly surprised to find that there were no branches through the living room or anything. In fact, from the inside there was no damage, not even a broken window! The pets seemed a little freaked out but fine.

Needless to say, we lost our electricity. Apparently the tree belonged to the city and they came and removed it yesterday evening. Once the tree was gone we could see that there was some roof damage to the main roof and especially the sunroom. I think we got off pretty lightly though, it sure could have been a lot worse. Some contractors paid by our insurance company came and tarped it up for the night.

We spent the night without electricity. In the evening it was kind of fun to use candles and the gas fireplace and stuff. We had not yet turned on our heater for the year but go figure - this happened on the first really cool night and it did get a little chilly overnight.

Today the contractors came back and did a more thorough temporary fix that will last until the insurance is all figured out. Around lunchtime the hydro company came out and hooked the power back up.

I have uploaded the pics, mostly taken by one of our neighbors, here!

In other news, Peyton seemed to be feeling a little better today.

And that's it for "Lots of Stuff Going On"... at least I think so... who knows what tomorrow will bring! 4 blog entries in one day is definitely a record for brindleweb though!

Wow - that tree was gigantic! I can't beleive it didn't crush the roof and go through your house. You guys (and the pets) were very lucky.

Hope Peyton is feeling better now.

Groady! Glad to hear no one (except the tree and the roof, of course) was hurt! The tree was huge! I wonder if it was just old?

How is Peyton? I have the sniffles and I'm holding her accountable ;)

Chaya is now getting short leash walks again! Yippee!

Hey Sue and Sue,

Yeah I think we were VERY lucky to get off with such light damage from such a huge tree. Maybe we just have a "tough" house! Yes, I think the tree was just old. It was probably over 100 years old, and when it was down we could see that it was rotten in the middle of the trunk (even though from the outside it looked fine).

I think (hope) Peyton's ear infections are cleared up. She is finished her antibiotics now and I will bring her back to the doc sometime this week to make sure everything is looking good. Sorry to hear about your sniffles, Sue P, we all seem to have a case of dragging-on sniffles here too, I guess it's just the time of year.

Glad to hear Chaya can do short walks again! How does the leg/shoulder seem? You must be relieved you don't have to carry her out for pee breaks anymore!
